“Anybody that has the good fortune to come through something that is very challenging for most to come through inevitably wants to reach back a hand, to everyone else.” So begins Diana Lindsay’s insight into why she and husband Kelly created Healing Circles Langley.
Diana recovery from stage 4 lung cancer was a remarkable journey. As many who have gone through a life-threatening illness can attest, much of the emphasis is often placed on curing a person of their disease, while the concept of healing the person is not always a priority. However, in the case of Diana and Kelly, the idea of healing was paramount to her recovery.
The journey continues with the emergence of a powerful opening of the heart of Diana and her husband Kelly through the creation of Healing Circles Langley. Healing Circles opens up support to anyone who needs it in the community. It began as an effort to give back to the community that had given so much to Diana and Kelly.
The beginning of Healing Circles Langley was born with Diana asking herself a simple question: “could we offer that support to anybody who needed it. If you were in crisis, if you were newly diagnosed, if you had just lost someone, could you guarantee that there would be someone there to listen? And that’s the basis of Healing Circles.”
Paired with the knowledge of Michael Learner, the Lindsays have created an incredibly powerful tool in the healing of people and communities. Healing Circles Langley has a designated location near downtown Langley, and hosts 15 ongoing circles that meet weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly with topics including cancer, chronic illness, chronic pain, again, grief and loss, and more.
There is obvious interest in this model of community members offering healing circles. Healing Circles Langley estimates monthly visits to be at or over 500 a month. At the time of this writing, there are at least 10 Healing Circles on the continent today. As the Lindsays have said: “We think that kind of anything is possible and anything can work.” This is indeed the case, as long as these ideas are paired with excellent leadership and steady support. Well done Lindsays, well done Healing Circles Langley.
